The Sacrament of Baptism

Firstly, we want to congratulate you on the birth of your child. We also want to welcome this new born child into our Parish Community.

Parents are the first teachers of their child in the way of way. The Baptism preparation is an effort to help them in that role.

Your child's Baptism will be a special moment for you and your family. It will also be a special moment for our parish as we welcome your child into the Christian Community.

Would you call your son Columba?

It is a beautiful name for a baby boy. Columba means “dove” in Latin, Italian, French and some of the other Romance languages. The dove is one of the forms by which the Holy Spirit appears therefore Columba signifies peace. It is the name of the patron saint of Long Tower parish and one of three patrons of Ireland. Because he spent so much time with the Blessed Sacrament, St Columba was called “Dove of the Church”. In Irish this translates as Colmcille.

If you are willing to give the name Columba as a first Christian name and use it as the daily name of the child as he grows up, your son can have life-long friendship with St Columba and protection from the Saint.
